A Mind Map is the Ultimate Creative Thinking Tool. It is a natural thinking tool that draws upon the inspiration and effectiveness of natural structures. Mind Maps, developed by Tony Buzan are an effective method not only useful for the generation of ideas by associations which boost up the creativity for design purpose. It is also used for note-taking and organizing one’s thought process etc. He is the person who taught us ground breaking technique for success.

Both Tony Buzan and Edward de Bono made us think in a different way by asking basic questions like:

  • How do I learn how to learn?
  • What is the nature of my thinking?
  • What are the best ways for creative thinking?
  • How can I memorize things easily?

The human brain is very different from a computer. Whereas a computer works in a linear fashion, the brain works associatively as well as linearly – comparing, integrating and synthesizing as it goes. Association plays a dominant role in nearly every mental function, and words themselves are no exception. Every single word and idea has numerous links attaching it to other ideas and concepts2

Mind Map can be used for any and every purpose in life. It can help you in all daily activities for example, in schools it helps for reading, smarter brain storming, revising, note taking, developing creativity, increasing their memory

potential and planning homework efficiently. It is a fact that those who use mind map regularly will usually have a sense of confidence that their aims are achievable. A Mind Map can also help us to produce more creative ideas and helps us to see things clearly.

It is true that different people learn things in different manner. Creating a learning atmosphere for a student or engaging a student mind is really a very difficult challenge. After several research done by  scholars , it is true that human mind will always approach in the type of symbols, images, or a network of connected ideas which is known as Mind Map, the name itself suggest mapping our Mind.

Basically, mind mapping makes note taking fun by avoiding dull, linear thinking and exercising creativity. Usage of mind map is hard to define by numbers. In fact, they can help to clarify anything and everything that you are thinking. Whether it is a personal or family matter, educational or business purpose, planning a birthday party or planning your life itself, summarizing a book, launching a project or anything else that you can think about. Few examples are given below

  • Note taking
  • Brainstorming
  • Problem solving
  • Studying more efficiently
  • Memorizing
  • Preparing for exams  and scoring better grades
  • Planning
  • Presenting  and  consolidating information
  • Gaining insight on complex subjects
  • Exercising creativity

How to Create a Mind Map

Creating a mind map is very simple:

  • Start writing or drawing the idea you aim to develop in the middle of a blank page.
  • Develop the related subtopics around this central topic and connect each of them to the center with a line as shown in the example.
  • Repeat the same process for generating lower-level subtopics by connecting each of those to the corresponding subtopic.

  • Use colors, drawings and symbols abundantly. Be as visual as you can, and your brain will thank you as you create the colourful and interesting map of your mind.
  • Keep topics as short as possible, just a single word or draw a picture instead of writing in detail – your mind map will be much more effective that way.
  • Be as creative as you can. Vary the thickness and length of the lines. Provide as many images as you can to emphasize important points. Every small thing that you do helps in engaging your brain.

A lot of students feel nervous when it comes to giving a presentation. Mind map takes care of that by giving everything a student needs for a powerful, memorable, winning presentation.

On a concluding note Mind mapping technique encourages students to see the whole picture and makes connections between theories, concepts and their own ideas.  It stimulates the brain, improves memory and increases concentration. It has been proven that Mind Map teaches a methodology which has the potential of transforming the way students learn.

This type of brainstorming exercise will naturally hook in to the right brain and allow one to think in a Non-Linear manner and help in radiant thinking which allows you to think in multiple directions simultaneously.
