It is amazing to know that some people can paint beautifully, and they really have difficulty in adding two and two? And why some people can understand the intricacies of calculus effortlessly, but struggle to write a one-page essay? This type of common thinking leads us to know which side of the brain dominates – the left or the right.

We know that different parts of the brain control different bodily and mental functions. Over the ages, a theory that has gained in popularity is that the right brain and the left brain are responsible for different modes of thought and that the way in which a person thinks will depend on which side of his brain predominates.

According to the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. Some of the abilities that are popularly associated with the right side of the brain include:

  • Recognizing faces
  • Expressing emotions
  • Music
  • Reading emotions
  • Color
  • Images
  • Intuition
  • Creativity

The left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language and analytical thinking. The left-brain is often described as being better at:

  • Language
  • Logic
  • Critical thinking
  • Numbers
  • Reasoning1

The left brain is like a filing cabinet or reference catalog. The files are like zip files that show an image for reference.

The right brain on the other hand is responsible for new information, feelings and emotions, abstracts and associations. Creative people usually use right brain more than the left side

It is true that everyone has the talents and skills to be creative, but sometimes we need to push our self in the right direction to set us on that path. We also need not leave the left brain out of the equation because it is in the left brain we will find reference to structure, context and value.

We all know that education is not a hobby or entertainment – and the purpose of school is not pleasure and amusement. Nevertheless, as per our own experience and research you will find, education that remains in the minds of students is often associated with three elements:

  • A strong and trusting relationship with teacher.
  • An interactive learning peers and neighbourhood.
  • Creativity and innovation that stimulate the “right-brain.”

Students who have a difficult time following verbal instructions can really benefit from writing down directions and developing better organizational skills. They can use colours and visuals to note things which help them to learn better than mere words. A good teacher will always include a balance of right-brain and left-brain methods while teaching to keep students occupied and engrossed in the topic that is being taught and that is why they are considered to be a good teacher.

I want to introduce myself as an educationalist and am a consultant for kids in training their brains. There is always going to be an overlap between certain brain functions of opposing hemispheres, e.g. functions using logical processes and lateral thinking processes, where one is a predominantly right-brain function and the other is a predominantly left-brain function. However, when logical processes are being used, the right brain does not switch off and vice versa. On the contrary, both of these brain processes work much more effectively when both sides of the brain are working together.I have trained a lot of slow learning kids and those who have less grasping abilities. With my training experience I suggest that the children need to be trained properly to make use of both hemispheres of the brain to acquire the required skill. Sureish Dnyandeo says:

I used both the sides of the brain and according to my 20 years of personal teaching I would like to share with parents that every child is a diamond.Let the child be stressless. Stress will be divert its attention from the good. Much writing practise improves writing speed and handwriting, much reading practise improves reading, when the child have sufficient knowledge in hand he starts reasoning, creating.A regular practise is required for every good habit the parents want to see in their child. Let the child speak whenever it wants. We can only provide knowledge rest it has to do on its own.

      Trupti says:

My son 10 yrs old is fully left handed. He is also very slow in writing. This may not a reason of their slowness that they are lefty. If children feel comfortable doing something by the left hand, its my suggestion let them be.

    Venkat Narayanan says:

in another form of a simple way let me put it like this
the words are – kapil, zoo, monkey, child, monolisa, london, flight, train, walk, flag, freedom, rajiv gandhi, mother, calcutta, finance and so on.

to keep remembering these words in formal way, just mug up and tell the said 17 words either same direction and or at different sequence -ie. the left brain is functioning

the another way to remember these is with creative idea ie. write an essay form in your mind stating :- I want to play cricket with kapil, on my way I went to zoo to see the monkey where I saw a child was crying, Inside the zoo I saw the photo of monolisa and it was better than the london one — pl keep doing like this in the imaginative form and develop it on your own
—– is the simptoms of right brain working
    with love

  16.
    Sanjeev says:

Both the sides are equally important in life… once the person comes to know that he uses the right or left brain more… then it would be great to use the other one more often so that there will be lot of new things happen in persons life…. which will give him a kick for better life….

  17.
    Devanath says:

Parrents must know about this and improve their child who is having low grasping power. Inducement required by parents only. Now a days Class teachers contribution for children devlopment is very low. So if parents take care of their children definately their wards will achieve more.
