Vetiver is a perennial, coarse bunchgrass native to India. It is commonly called ‘khus’ or ‘khus-khus’, though lesser known by its other name ‘vetiver’, which only few people are familiar with.

The essential oil from vetiver—concentrated liquid that contains volatile aroma compounds, extracted through steam distillation of its roots—is famous all over the Indian subcontinent for its distinct woody, smoky, and earthy aroma, used extensively in perfumes, cosmetics, and soaps, and in beverages as a flavouring agent.

Vetiver essential oil is used in aromatherapy, as its aroma has a very calming and soothing effect, but there’s more to it than just that—vetiver oil has many surprising health benefits…

Alleviates Inflammation. Vetiver essential oil has soothing and cooling effects that pacify all sorts of inflammation, particularly effective for inflammation in the circulatory and nervous systems. Furthermore, this essential oil is the most appropriate cure for inflammation prevalent during the summer in the dry South Asian regions, caused by sunstroke and dehydration, and the very hot and dry winds called “loo”.

Use a carrier oil like coconut oil to dilute the vetiver essential oil—just a few drops would be enough—before applying it on your body and skin. Gently massage the oil into your muscles or the affected area and leave it on the skin.

Improves Immunity. Free radicals in the body and the presence of toxins retard the body’s immunity. Antioxidants, which are found in high amounts in vetiver essential oil, neutralizes free radicals and eradicates toxins in the body and therefore boosts your immune system. Furthermore, it strengthens the white blood corpuscles (WBCs) “police force of the body” and provides protection against viral and fungal infections. You can do this by directly inhaling the aromatic vapours of vetiver essential oil or diffusing it into the air at home.

Prevents Bacterial Infections. The hot and humid climates found in tropical regions like India and its neighbouring countries, favour the rapid growth of microbes and bacteria. Consequently, when people inhabiting these regions are wounded, the plentiful bacteria that could easily infect the wound, makes it highly vulnerable to getting septic, especially the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.

Vetiver essential oil is Mother Nature’s cure against wounds turning septic—it effectively stops the breeding of S. aureus and prevents the wound from turning septic. The oil can be topically applied on external wounds or taken orally to protect internal wounds in visceral organs from turning septic.

Effectively make skin spots and scars disappear. The cicatrising (“sika-tree-sing”) property of vetiver oil accelerates the disappearance of scars and other marks—post-delivery stretch marks on pregnant women, fat cracks, after-spots left by pox, acne, and burn scars—present on the skin. Dead and discoloured tissues in the affected places are replaced by the growth of new tissues to achieve a uniform look—a process promoted by vetiver oil.

Highly effective lice repellent. Within just a few days of use, vetiver oil efficiently combats lice attack and subsequently improves scalp health—deep conditioning to the scalp affected by lice, and healing inflammation caused by lice bites, are amazing therapeutic solutions that vetiver oil offers.

Cures Insomnia and calms nerves. Just like overhauling and servicing are important to vehicles, vetiver tonic tones up every system of the bodydigestive, respiratory, circulatory, excretory, immune, endocrine, and nervous—while keeping the metabolic system in order, rejuvenating the body, restoring strength, and boosting immune function. It cushions the abrasive effect of shocks, fears, and emotional traumas by strengthening the nerves and increasing their resistance.

Vetiver essential oil, a well-known sedative alleviates Insomnia, a condition characterized by chronic loss of sleep, and also eliminates nervous irritation, convulsions, spams, epileptic and hysteric attacks, restlessness, nervousness, emotional bouts such as anger and anxiety, neurotic disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, and lack of control over limbs.

On a spiritual level, vetiver essential oil “lubricates” the seven chakras of the body, relaxes the nerves, mind, and body, eliminates negative energy from body and mind, and facilitates the onset of positivity and mental peace, which consequently alleviates painful emotions like depression and anxiety. According to Ayurveda, this oil is also a strong stress buster, and strikes a balance between Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, which subsequently reduces stress, eases bowels, and improves sleep.

Very strong anti-aging formula. Cell regeneration is effectively promoted by vetiver oil, thanks to its cicatrising (“sika-tree-sing”) properties which stimulate collagen formation. Consequently, this eliminates the appearance of age spots, dullness, dryness, acne marks, fine lines and wrinkles, and even strengthens the connective tissues in the epidermis – the outermost layer of skin. It restores lost elasticity in epidermal cells, and subsequently nurtures youthful, radiant, flawless, and well-toned skin, making vetiver essential oil the ultimate asset of the herbal anti-aging industry.
