Cocos nucifera. The scientific name for the large palm trees in which coconuts grow. The coconut, despite its name, is not really a nut. Botanically, it is a fruit, nourished by the naturally-occurring juice found in the centre of the young, green coconut—the coconut water. The solid white flesh of the coconut fruit—known as “coconut meat”—is what part of the coconut water ripens into, while the rest is retained as coconut water—94% water and very little fat.

Multi-nutrient Source

Carbohydrates, fibre, protein, vitamin C, and several important minerals—magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, calcium—are nutrients found in rich quantities in tender coconut water.

Free Radical Scavenger

Metabolism that occurs in our cells produces unstable molecules called free radical as a by-product. Injury or stress serves to further increase the generation of free radicals in our body. When the body enters a state of oxidative stress from there being too many free radicals in the biological system, our cells are damaged and consequently faces increased risk of disease.

Clinical trials conducted on lab animals exposed to toxins has shown that tender coconut water contains antioxidants which scavenge and neutralize free radicals, so they no longer cause harm.

Anti-diabetic

Diabetic animals watered with tender coconut water showed lowered levels of blood sugar and enhanced other health markers. It further indicated strong long-term blood sugar control by lowering the levels of Haemoglobin A1c leading to improved blood sugar levels, and also showed signs of reduced oxidative stress markers.

Tender coconut water can easily fit into a meal plan for people with diabetes, by virtue of its only 3 grams of fibre, and 6 grams of digestible carbohydrates per cup (240 ml). Subjects with Type 2 Diabetes and prediabetes, exhibited enhanced insulin sensitivity and previously pathological blood sugar levels dropping to normal by virtue of the magnesium present in tender coconut water.

Prevents Formation of Kidney Stones

Generally, kidney stones can be prevented by drinking enough fluids. According to clinical studies, coconut water may be even more effective at preventing kidney stones than plain water which is itself a great choice.

Calcium, oxalate and other compounds combine to form crystals in the urine leading to the formation of kidney stones. In clinical trails conducted on lab rats, it was found that coconut water prevented crystals from sticking to the kidneys and other parts of the urinary tract, and also reduced the number of crystals formed in the urine.

Biologically, high oxalate levels in urine results in increased generation of free radicals, which researchers believe is significantly reduced by the antioxidant properties of coconut water.
