Restores and maintains healthy heart

The powerful cholesterol-lowering properties of coconut water is a big health asset. Risk of heart disease is reduced, helped by drinking coconut water. The benefits are double here. Fat deposited in the liver is lowered to significant levels and triglycerides and cholesterol in blood are reduced, by consumption of coconut water.

Keeps blood pressure regulated

Controlling blood pressure is one of the significant ‘greats’ of coconut water consumption. The effect of coconut water consumption has shown, through the study of a small group of people, significant improvement in the systolic blood pressure (the higher number of a blood pressure reading i.e., 120/80), in 71% of the participants!

Impressively, furthermore, 240 ml of coconut water contains 600mg of potassium, which, in people with high or abnormal blood pressure, has shown to lower the levels of blood pressure. Non-human studies found that coconut water has anti-thrombotic activity, which may, potentially, prevent the formation of blood clots in the arteries.

Effective agent of rehydration

After strenuous exercise, the body has to cope with a drop in its required levels of electrolytes—minerals such as potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium that play several important roles in your body, including maintaining proper fluid balance—and needs hydration to be restored. The perfect beverage that does it is coconut water.

According to a couple of studies conducted, an agent equal to high-electrolyte sports beverages, and better than water in restoring hydration, was found in the form of coconut water, causing less nausea and stomach discomfort. However, rival studies have exposed stomach bloating and upset as contradictory effects of coconut water when compared to commercial high-electrolyte beverages.

When compared to other sports beverages, fluids and electrolytes lost during exercise were effectively replenished by coconut water.

A few tips pertaining to coconut water…

Calories and carbohydrate are present in coconut water in fairly low quantities. A subtle nuttiness in flavour and mildly sweet in taste are characteristics of a typical coconut. Though water that comes directly from the tender coconut is the freshest, it is best to consume coconut kept in cold storage within two to three weeks from the date of purchase.

Most grocery stores have bottled coconut water, but it is best to read the ingredients and avoid brands that contain added sugar or flavouring agents buy coconut water that is 100% pure.

Tender coconut water can be used in smoothies, chia seed pudding, vinaigrette dressing or substituted for plain water whenever a bit of natural sweetness in food is needed.
