Lalitha, a parent of Avila Convent, Coimbatore: Organic Food – How many of you really go for it? Does that really help?

I keep reading about the health benefits of Organic Food in various publications. I was wondering if anyone practicing eating only organic food. Very rarely I see some packaged food items in the popular grocery stores. In Chennai I have heard of places where they sell organically grown vegetables in some places during week ends.

I thought we would shift to eating vegetables grown organically. But the challenge is availability. Even in places where they sell organic food, there is not consistent supply of all vegetables. Also, organic vegetables cost much more than ordinary ones. Also, though they claim they are grown organically, I am not sure how to verify them.

Want to know if anyone in this community goes for organic food? If so how is the experience? Where do you buy them? Does it really help?

Yes , I believe we should use to protect ourselves from pesticides and all.

But the fact—
1. High cost as subsidy not available from Govt
2. non availability of  products easily at any shop.
3. Limited stock

Pooja Gupta, a parent of Vasant Vihar Playmate Pre school, Mumbai

My son garv gupta is in vasant vihar school thane. I have started using organic vegies now. It is easily available in an organic store near to my place and they even do home delivery. Price of course is higher but don’t you think we spend a lot on branded clothes, restaurants etc without thinking there actual value so why can’t we buy healthy vegies without considering its price. I want to give my family healthy food atleast I can give a try.

    Hello Moms,

    I have already gone through
Our concern towards giving our child best is always there. But in the race to give them Best we sometimes misses on “Better”.
As mentioned above, there are known issues with organic food (availability, genuine, costly) etc. One important study that came up is that organic farming will take another 10-15 years to be easily available in India, if measures (water and soil pollution) were taken now. So even Organic is not 50% orgainic.
    However, below are few tips
    1. Never give NON SEASONAL fruits and vegetables to your child (They are preserved with chemicals). I know this is not easy as everything is available in market. But I am following it from past 3 months, Google around for the seasonal vegetables and fruits. One thing amazing is that they are cheaper. With all what I have learnt in past few months and still learning, I am planning to start a blog on this.
    2. Avoid eating imported fruits and vegetables (they again preserved by chemicals)
    3. Always wash the vegetables and fruits before keeping them in fridge or storing.

I live in Chennai and yes we do have Organic shops in limited areas. The positive thing is that it is really good for health but the cost is slightly high and also the stocks are subject to availability. The difficult thing about it is just the “transition” you make towards using it.

Hi, My daughter is 3 1/2 years old . Please can you suggest me the best school in Bangalore. What about little Millennium Indira Nagar?

Mam, You also have to be aware of fraudulent companies who claim to only print Organic on the covers, because it can be sold twice or thrice its usual price. Its rampant in India.
we can even do something else alternatively. that is find out the local poor vendors who grow/buy the veges and greens in/from local farms or in their backyards and encourage them buying from them regularly and suggesting your friends to them. And advice the farmers through those vendors not to use pesticides and use organic fertilisers. Pick and choose cauliflowers and brinjals with worms and take care in cleaning them. We all should not be attracted by the showy colours and artificially clean fruits and vegetables but realise that the more flawless they are the more fertilisers are used. We can also make our children few vege and fruit plants in our own homes even in pots. Children growing in close contacts with plants tend to be better humans in future also.

Yes, I agree. Organically grown vegetables and fruits are not easily available and we may not be sure if they are truly organic. Even if we are ready to shell out more money for them(as in the long run, it may mean spending less on doctors and medicines), if they are not easily available then what do we do?
