Oh God! Can I never escape from the trauma of Craft work. When I was a kid, life was really simple. There were two kinds of people who existed on this planet, those who were good in craft and those who were not. I belonged to the latter and compensated by focusing on academics. But this ghost of craft has never really left me. It seeks its revenge through my kids. ‘Project work’ from schools just aims at that. I dread the summer holidays when there is a project work for every subject, which no common kid (like mine) can possibly handle. I hoped my better half would probably be adept in these projects. But he turned out to be even worse. He had nothing to offer save a sympathetic look. And pray why can’t teachers think beyond ‘global warming’, ice melting of poles, ‘nuclear disasters,’ as topics. Parents with poor craft skills have known to ‘purchase’ these projects from stores. What then is the whole idea of asking kids to do such projects. I seriously think that teachers should actually find out what has been the kids contribution towards these projects. They would be in for a real surprise.

On the other hand, if they choose to ignore the reality and continue with these projects, please do me a favour. Can I have the name of the store that sells such stuff. It will save me from such a bother

This is a sorry state of affairs in most schools. Why don’t you meet up with the teachers, principal and other concerned authorities and put forth this matter to them. Discuss the difficulties involved and also point out to the school authorities that it is hardly any learning process for the children. In fact it is more of stress to parents and this is passed on to the kids as well. Craft work for kids must be in line with the age of kids and must involve only minimal guidance from parents. Children must enjoy doing these things all by themselves and not get stressed about it.
And as far as marks are concerned, nobody in future is going to ask you about how many marks your kid has scored in craft in a lower class. So take it easy.

I very much agree with that lady’s comments. Teachers should definitely examine when a child submits a project as to whether that child has understood the project and what is the contributionof that child in doing the same. Family members doing the same and submitting it for the sake of ranking / marks is not the right way. Below Std. V, children they need to take the help of their parents and contribute their ideas / work in doing the project in order to understand it better.

Im lucky in this case….as my son who is in 6th std now does his project work himself…all Ive to do is to search Google for information on the given topic…rest all is done by him…..but I do agree with other parents that teacher should find out what is the contribution of the student in the project work

Thank God, I am not alone! My kids are in the Primary and am already dreading to see their diary every day lest I open up the Pandora Box. But I guess we will have to live with it. As the lady rightly said, it is revenge time for folks like us who are really poor in craft work, but what cannot be cured must be endured!

My son is in the ix std in a cbse school in chennai. As a family, including my son, we decided not to bother with craft. Never mind if he got a zero in the subject. He prefers to be an “outstanding” student during the craft period!!
I wish we had a choice like craft Or music OR dance etc…

I truly agree with the lady. The intent of the education system is good, but, I am sure that the school is not interested in finding out whether the child really has done the project work or not…So, I request the educating institute to be realistic in assigning the project works to their children..If the intent is serious, it is important that the teachers should make sure that the child has really understood the work (or not)…I for one appreciate hard work, whether it is from the child or from the educating institution…Hope somebody will really take attention towards this situation…..
