This book is about a home bred pet, Buck who suddenly and unexpectedly finds himself cast out into the world, going through experiences ranging from cruel to bizarre.
The narrative is lucid where the author seamlessly encapsulates the journey of a domesticated dog, in a captivating manner. It starts off with a Black Beauty like idyllic beginning, then moves on to the hardships faced and explains the inner gut instinct dormant in animals which introduces primal behaviour and the love for dominance.
The author explains in a very touching manner, the longing of Buck to get back into the wild once the urge has entered him. He gives us a vivid description of the gradual transformation of the Buck’s mind from wanting to go back home to yearning for freedom, power and dominance in the wild among his own kind.
The book ends with the spirit which is completely free and having gone through terrible hardships, values the freedom all the more. It is also an eye opener on the extremes endured by the huskies. Finally it makes us think about our treatment to the faithful companion whom we claim to love. The key points in the book may be observed as endurance and conquering against all odds.
I would say it is a must read for all dog lovers. It gives us such an insight about their feelings, their social patterns and their roots. This book is a tribute to dog kind and provides useful insights of the selfless, complete and uncompromising sacrifice that man has forced on them by domesticating the wild and free glorious animal which has immense intelligence and tremendous loyalty.
It leaves the reader with a compelling mull—How unworthy we are of this great being.

Subhadra, my son had this book as a rapid reader for 7th or 8th std in his school. Its a nice book, in fact we have watched a movie “Call of the Wild” on Star Movies (ending part — half hour) having a similar storyline.
I remember its mentioned in the book that Buck was a wild dog (wolf) but after he is captured & trained to work in tough terrains, he is left to defend himself. He comes across a pack of wolves & in the end finds he belongs to the wild. So we may say he is back to where he belongs. Animals should not be kept in captivity, especially if they belong to the wild forest. Humans have a tendency to ‘possess’ exotic, unique things around them
your review is impressive and inspires to change the mind set towards the domesticated animals.
